Our History

The Boy Scouts of America was established in February 1910, a few years after Boy Scouting was created in England by Sir Robert Baden Powell.

104 years later, in October of 2014, Troop 104 was established in North Aurora by Dr. Thomas G. Brooks, with the help of Mr. Ed Meyer, and Mr. Jan Lundsteen. With the support of then Union Congregational Church, now Living Hope Church, as our Chartering Organization, the Troop’s first meeting was held on Sunday, October 6, 2014. And with the enthusiasm and support of 12-year-old Connor Harms, an Arrow of Light Scout from Pack 301, our first meeting was attended by eight boys, most recruited by Connor, who years later would become the Troop’s first Eagle Scout. Dr. Brooks was the first Scoutmaster, Mr. Meyer served as an Assistant Scoutmaster, and Quartermaster, Mr. Lee Harms was an Assistant Scoutmaster, and Mr. Lundsteen acted as Troop Committee Chairman.

We intended to create a boy-run Troop as envisioned by the founder, Lord Baden Powell. Our main tenets were, and remain the Scout Oath, Scout Law, Scout Motto, and Scout Slogan. We have been able to have monthly outings, weekly meetings, summer camp each year, and in recent years, high adventure opportunities at Philmont. We strive to provide leadership opportunities to help boys grow into effective young adult citizens and community leaders. In the early years, our Troop raised necessary funds by holding several Enchilada dinners with the leadership of Mrs. Lorraine Del Toro. These were an all-hands-on- deck activity, and helped us survive those early years. Scout Spirit abounded!!

We are the only Troop in the District which meets on Sundays, a tradition which has persisted since the first meeting. Our membership has ranged from the original eight members to thirty-one members, with an average of about 20-25 active members. In 2021, Mr. Chris O’Brien became the Troop’s second Scoutmaster, and in 2022, Mr. Dave Weakman assumed the Troop Committee chairmanship. At the time of this writing, our Troop has celebrated a total of three Eagle Scouts, Connor Harms, Antonio Del Toro, and Andrew Simmons, with many more on the way.

We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to our Chartering Organization, formerly the Union Congregational Church and now Living Hope Church. Their unwavering support has been instrumental in enabling us to do what we do. We are incredibly thankful for their ongoing commitment and partnership in our mission to empower and develop young leaders in our community.
